Women In Medicine: Past, Present & Future
Women have made great strides in the field of medicine since 1849, when Elizabeth Blackwell became the first woman to receive a medical degree in the United States. Yet, 172 years later, women entering medical school still face gender-based inequities that may persist throughout their career. Among the top issues are the gender wage-gap, underrepresentation in specialties, and disparities within leadership roles. The intersection of motherhood and career progression continues to be a highly relevant but sensitive issue for women in medicine, further exacerbated by the pandemic. Enjoy an exciting discussion on these topics and more, incorporating the lived experiences of our esteemed panelists. This webinar reviews the achievements of women leaders in nephrology, current challenges, and potential solutions, including the value of mentorship and sponsorship.
University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine*
Dr Kelepouris is a Professor of Clinical Medicine and Director of Outpatient Dialysis Services in the Division of Nephrology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. She is the immediate past President of Women in Nephrology. Dr Kelepouris has held several leadership positions including: Deputy Chief of Nephrology and Renal Transplantation at Temple University School of Medicine, Chief, Division of Nephrology and Hypertension, Director, Nephrology Training Program, Vice Chair for Education and Academic Affairs Department of Medicine, Interim Chair, Department of Medicine and Associate Vice Dean for Clinical Research, Department of Medicine at Drexel University College of Medicine. She has published in several peer reviewed journals and serves as a reviewer for journals such as AJKD, CJASN and KI. Dr Kelepouris has been an invited lecturer for numerous talks including: “Women in Nephrology Nancy E Gary Memorial Lecture: Gender Equality in the Workplace” and “Contract Negotiations for an Academic/Private Nephrology Job” Professional Development Seminar at the 2019 ASN National Meeting, Washington, DC. Additionally, she lectured on “Leadership and Diversity in an Academic Environment” at the 2018 ASN National Meeting. She is also a member of several professional societies including the NKF.
University of Cincinnati, Ohio*
Silvi Shah, MD, is an assistant professor in the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension at the University of Cincinnati, Ohio. After completing her residency in Internal Medicine at the University at Buffalo (SUNY), she completed her general nephrology fellowship from the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Ohio followed by a transplant nephrology fellowship at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. Dr Shah completed her masters in clinical and translational research at the University of Cincinnati and is currently pursuing a doctorate in clinical epidemiology. She is board certified in both Internal Medicine and Nephrology.
Dr Shah’s works as a clinical investigator studying women’s health in kidney disease including pregnancy, health disparities in kidney disease, cardiovascular health, and kidney disease. She is a recipient of the Center for Clinical and Translational Science Training career development award, and the Junior Faculty Award. Dr Shah has authored several peer-reviewed manuscripts and has presented at various premier international and national meetings. She is an associate editor for Advances in Chronic Kidney Disease journal and serves on the editorial board of Kidney360 and Kidney Medicine journals.
Dr Shah leads the American Society of Nephrology’s “Women’s Health and Research in Nephrology” community and is an executive member of the American Society of Transplantation’s “Women’s Health Community of Practice.” She is a fellow of the American Society of Nephrology, the American Society of Transplantation, the National Kidney Foundation, and the American College of Physicians.
Dr Shah enjoys teaching and mentoring medical students, residents, and fellows. She currently serves on the executive committee of the Nephrology Social Media Collective, and as a faculty member in NephJC (online nephrology journal club).
Natasha N Dave, MD is a nephrologist and medical director at Strive Health in Florida. She completed her internal medicine residency training at Mount Sinai Hospital in Chicago and then completed her Nephrology fellowship and chief year at Baylor in Houston. Post-fellowship she joined Baylor as an assistant professor of medicine primarily practicing at the Michael E DeBakey VA Medical Center prior to moving to Miami. While in Houston, her predominant interest included a quality improvement (QI) project assessing the impact of a monthly telehealth clinic for rural chronic kidney disease patients.
Dr Dave’s other clinical and educational interests include mentorship, social media/educational content generation, and as her Twitter profile (@NatashaNDave) suggests, electrolytes. She serves on the Executive Council of Women in Nephrology and is involved in a number of online projects and roles that began after she completed a one year social media internship with the Nephrology Social Media Collective (NSMC). Some of these roles include being a faculty contributor for the Renal Fellow Network and American Journal of Kidney Diseases blogs as well as partaking in social media activities with National Kidney Foundation, Nephrology Business Leadership University, Kidney Medicine, and NSMC.

Kelly Reed, PhD, joined Otsuka in 2012 and is currently a Senior Clinical & Scientific Liaison on our Nephrology East Team. Dr Reed has collaborated with several national professional organizations and healthcare systems providing educational presentations on hyponatremia and Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD). She has been a leader in resource development for the MSL team, co-led the nephrology MSL new hire training program during expansion and served as a mentor to several MSL new hires. Dr Reed earned her doctorate from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia and completed her clinical internship at the Mailman Center for Child Development in Miami, Florida, followed by a two year fellowship at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.
