Nutritional Considerations In Peritoneal Dialysis
Background
In this webinar, Drs Joshi and Shah share their expertise in peritoneal dialysis (PD) and nutrition. They will start by providing an overview of PD and highlight the key differences between PD and hemodialysis (HD). They will provide an overview of nutritional concepts—including macronutrients such as protein, and electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, and phosphorus—in PD, and provide dietary recommendations for patients receiving PD using evidence-based research.Did You Know?
- There were more than 130,000 individuals newly diagnosed with end stage kidney disease (ESKD) in the United States in 2020, of which 12.7% received peritoneal dialysis (PD)1
- It is estimated that 30-50% of patients on PD experience malnutrition, which is comparable to the prevalence of malnutrition seen in patients receiving HD2
- Macronutrient and electrolyte considerations are important principles for patients receiving PD
- It is important that clinicians have a better understanding of sodium, potassium, phosphorus, acid/base balance, and protein recommendations for patients receiving PD to help improve patient outcomes

Shivam Joshi, MD

Shivam Joshi, MD, received his BS from Duke University and his MD from the University of Miami. He completed his residency at Jackson Memorial Hospital/University of Miami and his nephrology fellowship at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He has been featured in the NY Times, CNN, and The Wall Street Journal. Dr. Joshi is an Associate Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Central Florida College of Medicine. He has a research interest in plant-based diets in kidney disease and has authored or co-authored over 50 scientific articles. He speaks frequently on this subject to audiences worldwide and is the youngest nephrologist to receive the highest award in renal nutrition, the National Kidney Foundation’s Joel D. Kopple Award. Ankur Shah, MD is Assistant Professor of Medicine and Associate Program Director of the Nephrology Fellowship training program at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. He completed residency in internal medicine at Temple University Hospital, followed by fellowship at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he served as chief fellow and received advanced training in medical education. His primary interests are home dialysis including both peritoneal dialysis and home hemodialysis, topics in which he has published numerous peer reviewed articles as well as textbook chapters and has lectured both nationally and internationally. He is a decorated educator having mentored dozens of medical students, residents, and fellows and received the dean’s excellence in teaching award, department of medicine teaching award, and nephrology fellowship teaching awards at Brown and is a winner of the American Society of Nephrology’s Innovations in Kidney Education contest. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Nephrology, the National Kidney Foundation, and the American College of Physicians.
Sushma Shiravanthe, PharmD, BCPS

Sushma Shiravanthe, PharmD, BCPS, is a Medical Science Liaison at Otsuka Pharmaceutical Development & Commercialization, Inc. (OPDC) covering Northern California. Dr. Shiravanthe earned her BS in Brain, Behavior, and Cognitive Science and Doctorate of Pharmacy degrees from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI. She completed residency training at Ascension St. Vincent Anderson in Anderson, IN during which time she also earned a teaching certificate from Purdue University College of Pharmacy. Dr. Shiravanthe is Board Certified in Pharmacotherapy (BCPS) and is a licensed pharmacist in Indiana and California. Prior to joining Otsuka, Dr. Shiravanthe worked as a clinical pharmacist at Ascension St. Vincent Anderson for 2.5 years, and as a clinical pharmacy specialist at the Department of Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Healthcare System for 3 years. During this time, she also served as a preceptor for the pharmacy residency program clinical teaching skills, grand rounds, and clinical research rotations. Her clinical practice experience includes internal medicine, cardio-renal diseases, infectious diseases, and geriatrics.
