Women’s Health in Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) – A Focus on Pregnancy & Family Planning

Background

Women with ADPKD overall are as likely as the general population to have a successful pregnancy resulting in a live birth. Women with hypertension and ADPKD are more likely than normotensive women to develop pre-eclampsia, premature delivery, and low-birth-weight babies. All women with ADPKD who become pregnant should be medically managed by a multidisciplinary team including obstetricians and nephrologists.1

Did You Know?

While most women with ADPKD have safe pregnancies and healthy babies2, it is important for women with ADPKD and their care providers to be aware of the risks associated with pregnancy in ADPKD.

Why Attend This Webinar?

In this webinar, Dr. Niloofar Nobakht will provide an overview of ADPKD as a genetically inherited disease and describe the burden of ADPKD as it pertains to women of child-bearing potential. This webinar will provide insight into the challenges women with ADPKD face during pregnancy, including risks to both themselves as well as the baby. Dr. Nobakht will then describe general management principles for women with ADPKD to support a healthy pregnancy, as well as share options and resources for families with ADPKD planning to become pregnant.

What You Will Learn:

  1. ADPKD background and overview; including epidemiology, genetic pattern of inheritance, and disease burden
  2. An overview of pregnancy in ADPKD; including the impact of ADPKD on family planning and pregnancy, as well as the impact of pregnancy on disease progression
  3. A review of the fetal and maternal complications that women with ADPKD face, as well as an overview of general management strategies for ADPKD during pregnancy
  4. Options and resources for families with ADPKD planning to become pregnant
