About This Event
From Diagnosis to Management in IgA Nephropathy: How Health Literacy Shapes the Patient Journey
Background:
Health literacy is defined by the Institute of Medicine as the degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services needed to make informed health decisions.1 Low health literacy affects 25% of patients with CKD and is associated with increased morbidity and death.2 The annual global incidence of IgA nephropathy (IgAN) is 2.5 cases/100,000; however this varies by region and ethnicity.3 The annual US incidence is around 1.29/100,000 persons.4
Did You Know?
- Nearly 9 in 10 adults in America have trouble understanding some or all the health information they receive from HCPs or publicly.5
- Many patients with IgAN have lost nearly 50% of their kidney function at the time of diagnosis.6
Why Attend This Webinar?
Learn about health literacy and how it impacts patients with CKD including IgAN. Dr. Velez will share her expertise as a nephrologist treating patients with IgAN as well as discuss some of the challenges in her own practice. We will discuss how differing levels of health literacy can impact the patient journey during presentation, diagnosis, prognosis, and management, including access to care.
What You Will Learn
- What is health literacy and how it relates to kidney disease and the patient journey in IgAN.
- Clinical features, diagnosis, and prognosis of IgAN and how differing levels health literacy can impact patient outcomes.
- How healthcare professionals can support patients with differing levels of health literacy.
