1. Navigating IgA Nephropathy: Pathogenesis, the Role of APRIL and the 4-Hit Process, and a Patient Case Study

During this presentation you will learn the clinical presentation, diagnosis, prognosis, and unmet treatment needs of IgAN. You will then take a deep dive into the current understanding of IgAN pathogenesis including the four hit cascade and the key role B-cells and APRIL (A PRoliferation-Inducing Ligand) play in driving disease progression.

Here you can get an in-depth look at IgAN pathogenesis and the journeys of patients living with IgAN.
  • Pathogenesis: See the origins of IgAN at the molecular level and how that results in its progression

Dr. Biruh Workeneh is a provider in the MD Anderson Internal Medicine Center and a Professor in the Section of Nephrology. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine and joined MD Anderson in 2015. Dr. Workeneh graduated from medical school at the University of Texas McGovern Medical School and completed a clinical nephrology and post-doctorate fellowship at Stanford University. He has received numerous nephrology, teaching, and research awards, served as primary investigator in multiple clinical trials, and has been the author of many publications.

Geoffrey Lockwood, PharmD, BCPS, MBA is a clinical pharmacist who works as a Senior Medical Science Liaison with Otsuka Pharmaceutical Development & Commercialization, Inc. He has been in his current role for 2 years, supporting Nephrology. Prior to joining Otsuka, he worked as an Emergency Medicine and Critical Care Clinical Pharmacist at Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Dr Lockwood earned his Doctor of Pharmacy Degree from Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan. Dr Lockwood completed a PGY-1 Pharmacy Practice Residency with Christus Spohn Health System in Corpus Christi, Texas. Upon completion of residency, Dr. Lockwood worked as a Critical Care Clinical Pharmacy Specialist with Christus Spohn Memorial Hospital in Corpus Christi, Texas. He then moved to South Bend, Indiana where he took on the role of Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacy Residency Program Coordinator at Memorial Hospital of South Bend. Dr Lockwood then moved to Elkhart General Hospital where he started the Emergency Medicine Clinical Pharmacy Program and served as an Emergency Medicine Clinical Pharmacy Specialist. Dr Lockwood is currently working to complete his MBA with a Value-Driven Organization emphasis through Central Michigan University. Dr Lockwood is board certified in pharmacotherapy and is a licensed pharmacist in the states of Michigan and Indiana.

Abigail Yancey, PharmD, FCCP, BCPS

Abigail Yancey, PharmD, FCCP, BCPS, is a Medical Science Liaison at Otsuka Pharmaceuticals Development & Commercialization, Inc. (OPDC). Dr Yancey earned her B.S. in Pharmacy and Doctorate in Pharmacy (PharmD) from St. Louis College of Pharmacy in St. Louis, MO. She completed a pharmacy practice residency at University Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio and a specialty residency in adult internal medicine at The Ohio State University. Prior to joining Otsuka, she spent 18-years at St. Louis College of Pharmacy as a Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice with a clinical practice site at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital. Dr Yancey was highly involved as an interdisciplinary educator for internal medicine resident physicians and a preceptor for both pharmacy students and residents. Dr Yancey is a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist (BCPS) and is a Fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (FCCP).
