Major Depressive Disorder In Chronic Kidney Disease
Major Depressive Disorder affects more than 260 million people worldwide1. The reported prevalence of depression in patients with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) ranges from 20-65%2. This presentation provides an overview of both MDD and CKD and discusses their overlap of symptomology.

Shayan Shirazian, MD

Dr Shirazian received his undergraduate and medical degrees from Brown University and did his internal medicine residency and nephrology fellowship at the Columbia University Irving Medical Center. He spent 7 years at NYU-Winthrop Hospital where he was the fellowship program director and the director of nephrology clinical trials before being recruited back to Columbia. He is currently an associate professor of medicine in nephrology and a director of in-center and home dialysis at Columbia.
His research aims to test, and implement, interventions to improve quality of life and self-care in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end stage renal disease. To this end, he has been the principal investigator on several investigator-initiated grant-funded studies in this area. He has over 50 peer reviewed publications, and serves on the editorial board of BMC Nephrology.

Darcy Leon is a psychiatric nurse practitioner currently working in outpatient psychiatry in Tarrytown, NY. She specializes in the treatment of mood disorders, traumatic brain injury, substance use disorders, and treatment-refractory psychiatric illnesses. Darcy also has a specific interest in psychodynamic psychopharmacology, which she employs to better connect patients with the ways their personal experiences interact with medication treatments.

He earned his Doctorate of Pharmacy from Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in Albany, New York. Prior to joining Otsuka, he was a Global Pharmacovigilance Case Processor in Specialty Medicine at Bayer, working closely with colleagues in Brazil and Germany. Prior to that, he was a Pharmacy Manager for CVS, working in the highest volume, 24-hour stores in Northern New Jersey, and has experience working for an independent pharmacy specializing in fertility medications. He is currently licensed as a pharmacist in New Jersey and resides in Hoboken, New Jersey.
